Pierre review – David Harewood’s twisty noir is an instant crime classic https://ift.tt/vjrAdJ7 Ellen E Jones Harewood has always had star power to burn – and he well and truly ignites this bold, sharp show about working in the police as a person of colour. What a brilliant milestone for Black British cop drama
Some of us are too young to have seen David Harewood play Othello at the National Theatre in London back in ’97. It was the first time, on that stage, that Shakespeare’s Black lead was played by a Black actor – as opposed to a white one in blackface makeup. Even if you missed that groundbreaking performance, on the basis of Harewood’s star power in the London-set crime drama Pierre, you can be assured he blew the roof off.
Pierre’s co-writer Roy Williams may not be the Bard, but he is another highly acclaimed playwright with an interest in how Black men fare in this country. Pierre on Channel 4 isn’t exactly Othello at the National, either, but it is another cultural milestone in the story of Black British crime drama.

Daryz makes history with back-to-back Arc de Triomphe triumphs https://ift.tt/8sarIKh Greg Wood at Longchamp Winning rider Barzalona hails ‘exceptional horse’
Stud beckons over bid for unprecedented third win
It was a very different, distinctly brutalist Longchamp that last saw a colt go back-to-back in the Arc, and 48 years on from Alleged’s second victory in 1978 with Lester Piggott holding the reins, the uber-modernist new grandstand rose to acclaim its first legend here on Sunday as Daryz produced the same overwhelming turn of finishing speed down the straight that had carried him to victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 12 months ago.
Daryz and Mickaël Barzalona did not hit the front until inside the final furlong, but they had been closing on Bay City Roller, who had disputed the lead for much of the way, to such effect from well over a furlong out that the result was in no real doubt.

Lamine Yamal stars again as Spain see off Czechia and maintain perfect start https://ift.tt/viJxNoq Sid Lowe Lamine Yamal says he feels like Superman or Spider-Man sometimes, and Spain’s fans are starting to wonder if he just might be. There is something comic book hero about what the teenager is doing right now, some unexplained super power swelling inside him. For the third consecutive game he scored inside six minutes, curling in another outrageous goal as Spain completed their World Cup homecoming in Oviedo with a 3-1 win over Czechia that leaves them a single point from the Nations League quarter finals already.
And yet in a game which seemed to have been done at half-time, when Spain led 2-0 after Rodrigo Hernandez had added the second and Lamine Yamal was withdrawn, his show seemingly over, the danger returned. Czechia, vastly improved after the break, pulled one back through Jiri Slama on 69 and then were denied a 79th-minute equaliser when Vassilis Fotias, the referee, who rescued Spain, harshly ruled out a Ryan Naderi goal – apparently for a foul on Robin Le Normand as the free-kick that led to it was swung in.

Arsenal shelve plans for major expansion of Emirates Stadium https://ift.tt/4oHsWdz Ed Aarons Club opt for improvements in hospitality and retail
An increase to 60,704 capacity had been considered
Arsenal have shelved plans for a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium, opting for a programme of smaller improvements as the club’s owners review the Premier League champions’ wider operation.
Arsenal set up a working group led by the chief executive, Richard Garlick, in 2024 to examine the feasibility of increasing the 60,704 capacity, with some reports they could temporarily hold home matches at Wembley. But the club has decided against major redevelopment and will concentrate on what it described as the “continued evolution” of their home since 2006.
